Nailed It!

I don’t want to brag, but this morning I nailed it as a Mom. Somehow all of the stars aligned, the good Lord was watching over me, and some type of alien life form must have taken control of my children, because they were so well-behaved that I had to stop and take a second to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I literally pinched myself when my son asked if he could clean the sink while I was in the shower. I mean, what four-year old boy asks to clean the bathroom for fun in the morning before school? Well, as I learned this morning, my son does.

If any one of you reading this right now happened to catch my previous post about my family’s morning routine, you know that it has been a constant struggle for me to wrangle my children into getting ready for school. (If you missed it, you can read Building Better Habits here). But today was different. Today, I was able to enjoy the morning with my children. Today, we were able to start the day with laughter, high fives, and a clean bathroom.

It was a morning of miracles. And I wish that I could take all of the credit, but I honestly did nothing to deserve it. All it took for my kids to be engaged in our morning routine, was me asking one simple question.

If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.

~Nora Roberts

As soon as I asked my kids for their opinion on something, I put them more in control of their routine.  Rather than yelling at them to hurry up and do something, I asked them if they wanted to help. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve asked them to help a million times over the years, and the response I get is not usually what I got today. I think the difference today, was that I listened to them and responded in a more positive manner. I kept the smile on my face, and did everything I could to infuse my good mood into their beautiful little hearts. And what I got in return was two kids that knocked it out of the park.

On top of cleaning the bathroom sink, they helped to make their lunches, assisted with making my morning smoothie, and packed their own backpacks for school. They even both surprised me by getting dressed all by themselves while I was in my room getting ready. And my son even put his clothes on the right way! No backwards pants today for that guy!

The best part, is that when our day starts off on such a great note, our days are filled with so much more positivity than normal. I was able to get through my workday without letting minor annoyances get to me. I was able to stay focused and motivated. I was able to be productive. It is truly amazing how much your attitude and how you project to the world around you can change your perspective.

I am so grateful for this morning, and the time spent with my kids that was filled with smiles. Sometimes daily life can wear us Mommas down, and cause us to lose sight of the miracles in front of us. Sometimes all it takes is a smile and a grateful heart to realize that everything you need to have a good day is right in front of you.

And if all else fails, we can just lose our shit like every other day of the week and try again tomorrow.
